What is the Pupil Premium?
The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011 and is additional funding that the government gives to schools for each pupil on roll where they are deemed to be disadvantaged.

Who receives the Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is allocated to pupils:
- In Reception to Year 11 who are recorded as eligible for free school meals, or who have been recorded as eligible in the past 6 years, including eligible children of families who have no recourse to public funds.
- Who are looked after by local authorities, referred to as looked-after children.
- Who have been previously looked after by a local authority or other state care, referred to as previously looked-after children.
How much are the Pupil Premium Grants worth?
The Pupil Premium for the financial year 2023-2024 is as follows:
Pupils who are eligible for free school meals, or have been eligible in the past 6 years: £1455
Pupils previousy looked after by a local authority or other state care: £2530
Children who are looked after by the local authority: £2530
What is the Service Pupil Premium?
Service pupil premium us additional funding for schools, but it is not based on disadvantage.
Who receives the Service Pupil Premium?
Pupils in state-funded schools in England attract service pupil premium funding, if they meet one or more of the following criteria:
- one of their parents is serving in the regular armed forces (including pupils with a parent who is on full commitment as part of the full-time reserve service, and also pupils whose parent is serving in the armed forces of another nation and is formally stationed in England)
- they are registered as a ‘service child’ in any school census in the past 6 years
- one of their parents died while serving in the armed forces, and the pupil receives a pension under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme or the War Pensions Scheme
How much is the Service Pupil Premium worth?
Pupils in state-funded schools in England attract service pupil premium funding, at the rate of £335 per eligible pupil.
